The Marlborough region at the top of New Zealand's South Island is the largest wine growing region with an enviable international reputation for producing the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. It also makes extremely good Chardonnay and Riesling, and is fast developing a reputation for excellent quality Pinot Noir. One third of the regions ten thousand hectares of grapes are planted in Sauvignon Blanc.
