From the Dead Sea to the Red Sea, here's exciting mountain biking through an ancient land rich in history, culture and natural wonders.

We'll ride off-road tracks parallel to the ancient Kings' Highway — the world's oldest trade caravan route. We'll feast at a traditional Bedouin Zarb. You'll visit the spiritual site of Mt Nebo with views over the 'Promised Land', then swim in the Dead Sea, 400 m below sea level.

We cross 2 deserts, and visit one of the 7 wonders of the world: Petra, built into cliff faces. We camp in Bedouin tents, and finish our tour with a dip in the Red Sea.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Madaba

No biking

Today is arrival day in Madaba, 30 km from the capital, Amman. In the late afternoon, you'll meet your guide and your tour group for the first time to be briefed on the tour itinerary. Now's the time to get any questions answered, and to make sure you're fully prepared to start tomorrow morning. Next, we head to one of our favourite Madaba restaurants for a welcome dinner. It's your first chance to experience Jordan's delicious Middle Eastern-style cuisine.

Meals: Dinner

DAY 2

Madaba to Mt Nebo to Mukawir to the Dead Sea

Biking: 78 km

Today we'll explore Madaba and its astonishing 6th century mosaics. Next we'll drive to Mt Nebo (or Pisgah in the Bible), where Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land. Choose your bike and helmet at our store, then ride past farms and villages to the ancient former trade route, the King's Highway. At Libb junction, climb a hill for panoramic Dead Sea views. At nearby Mukawir, a local family will host us for lunch. Next, we'll ride 1000 metres downhill to the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on Earth.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch with a local family, Dinner

DAY 3

The Dead Sea to Karak

Biking: 71 km

This morning, float in the Dead Sea's buoyant and therapeutic salty waters. Alternatively, enjoy a spa at the hotel. After this uplifting start, cycle the Dead Sea route south for 50 km. We have a picnic lunch, then climb 25 km to Karak Crusader Castle. For those not keen on such a long uphill challenge, just cruise up in the 4x4. Next we explore the castle, built in 1142 — a great example of military genius. Then we check into our hotel, have dinner, and perhaps an evening walk in Karak town.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Karak to Wadi Hasa to Dana Nature Reserve

Biking: 57 km

This morning we will leave Karak to rejoin the King's Highway, heading for amazing views at Al Hasa canyon. We descend into the wadi (dry river valley), then, over 22 km, climb 800 m to the top of its southern bank. The ride is fully supported by a 4x4 vehicle, so anytime you've had enough biking, we'll be there for you. After a picnic lunch, we'll drive 37 km to Dana village on the wadi's edge. We can enjoy the fascinating nature surrounding the village on a self-guided trail.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Dana to Shoubak to Wadi Araba to Little Petra

Biking: 70 km

Today, a bike ride down the King's Highway to Shoubak, at one of the highest elevations in Jordan, to explore the remains of its Crusader castle. We then climb past two villages to an off-road track with great views of the Wadi Araba Desert. Again, the 4x4 vehicle is available instead of biking. Next, join our guide on a single trail descent or choose a gentler route to Al-Beidha (Little Petra) with its rock-cut monuments and water channels. Then, off to nearby Wadi Musa, our base for exploring Petra's rose-hued ruins.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Petra

Biking optional

This morning a local guide will leads us through an immense sandstone crack into what feels like another world: ancient Petra. Then you're on your own to explore as you like. Petra is famously described as 'a rose-red city as old as time'. Established in the 6th century BC, it's Jordan's most popular attraction, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the extraordinary buildings cut into rock, the towering rock surrounds, and the ancient hydraulic engineering. You'll stay at the lovely Petra Moon Hotel.

Meals: Dinner

DAY 7

Petra to Wadi Rum

Biking: 55 km

We rejoin the King's Highway today for a short drive to Rajif at 1565 m. Then we'll bike through amazing desert landscapes and have lunch at an old caravan station. We'll bike to the desert highway to meet our 4x4, and drive to Rum Bedouin village to meet our host. We will then travel by jeep to the Wadi Rum Protected Area to settle at our Bedouin campsite, watch the sunset and enjoy 'zarb' — a traditional meal of meat and vegetables cooked under the sand. Much of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia was filmed here.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Wadi Rum Desert to Disi mudflats

Biking: 25 km

After breakfast we're off to the mudflats of Disi — a vast flat area surrounded by amazing sandstone formations. We'll then ride through the colourful and massive desert mountains. After lunch, a drive to the coastal city of Aqaba in the far south. We will have enough time to have a plunge into the Red Sea, the world's northernmost tropical sea, before heading back to our hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch

DAY 10

Departure Day: Aqaba

No biking

Today we end the tour with a free day in Aqaba. A group airport transfer will be arranged, depending on the flight schedule. It's a 3 hour drive from Aqaba to the airport in Amman, and then it's farewell to this unforgettable ancient land.
