There will be time to relax at an idyllic lake, where hopefully we will be able to prepare a smoked fish over an open fire, as we watch the locals fishing and harpooning. The edge of the rainforest is nearby and we'll complete our day by bike, with great views of lakes and the ocean. We'll stay the night at a hotel.

Java: Devil's Mine (Ijen volcano)

Biking/Elevation: 44–54 km/1800–2000 m up (6–8 hours riding)

Only hard-core bikers will be able to make this climb in one day! For everyone else, there's the minivan. The ride starts flat, but gets steeper as we pass sugar-cane plantations, cocos palms, jungle, and villages. Then it's an 8km downhill to a plain surrounded by coffee-plantations and volcanos. Then, another 10 km climbing past coffee plantations and wilderness to our camp ground at the Devil's Mine. For those who can still walk, it's just 400 m to the edge of the smoking volcano. It's a special place to admire as the sun sets. Tonight: a barbecue and a bonfire at the camp ground.

DAY 9

Devil's Mine to Banyu

Bike or hike to the crater's edge before sunrise to see smoke on the ghostly green water. It's like looking into a giant cauldron of a witch's kitchen! At this altitude (2250 m), there's an incredible view of the nearby volcanoes Merapi (2800 m) and Raung (3322 m). Then, its 35 km of downhill through jungle, coffee and cocos plantations to our destination — the ocean! On the way, a short stop at a tropical waterfall. Once fed and refreshed, we'll visit a market in Banyu, and chat with the locals. Then, we'll check in to our hotel for the night.

We'll watch locals produce coffee, cacao, and red sugar, then climb 350 m over 10 km of jungle trail, asphalt and shingle, through coffee, cacao and rubber plantations. We'll stop at Treblesala Estate, one of many former Dutch coffee manufacturers, and have coffee and Tape Goreng, a traditional fermented dish. Next: an awesome downhill past lianas, ferns and jungle-giants. Shy black monkeys and screaming birds will follow us to a beach where we'll camp, bathe in a waterfall, and grill fish around a bonfire.

Meru Betiri National Park

We'll ford streams and rough tracks that will challenge our biking abilities. Our reward: a kilometre-long beach just for us — a terrific place to relax!
