Hike to the foot of Mt Everest in this rewarding journey through the majestic home region of the Sherpa people.

We'll have a day to explore Nepal's exuberant and spiritual city of Kathmandu. Then, we'll fly into the remote mountain town of Lukla (2850 m) to begin our trek into the Khumbu region of the Himalayas. The views on clear days are breathtaking.

You'll be surrounded by pure mountain rivers, clean mountain air, glaciers, rock faces, and towering mountains.

DAY 3

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Hiking: 7 hours

A busy trail leads us to Jorsale (2850 m) across the spectacular suspension bridge high above the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi rivers. Shortly after this, we'll have our first glimpse of Everest, in the distance off to the northeast. After a long and steep trail we reach the remarkable Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar (3440 m). We'll stay tonight in a lodge by a tea house, perched high on a hillside.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Namche Bazaar (acclimatisation day)

No hiking

Today is for relaxing and acclimatising. We'll take a pleasant day trip to explore and visit Shyangbuche at the top of Namche Bazaar, the site of the closest airstrip to Mt Everest. We'll also visit the aptly named Hotel Everest View, the highest hotel in the world (3880 m) and the village of Khumjung. We'll return to Namche in the evening.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Namche to Tengboche (Thyangboche)

Hiking: 6 hours

A pleasant trail to the northeast takes us on a direct line to Everest, where we see the beautiful mountains in the Khumbu region, including the particularly beautiful Ama Dablam (6856 m) and other peaks in the distance. Later, a long steep climb for about 2 hours takes us to Thyangboche Monastery (Tenzing Norgay was once sent here to be a monk). The reward will be well worth the climb, when we enter the grounds of the monastery and are greeted by one of the most magnificent mountain views in the world. Tonight we'll stay in a tea house lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Tengboche to Pheriche

Hiking: 6 hours

Today starts with a steep muddy descent through rhododendron forest to Devuche, site of a Buddhist monastery. We then cross a bridge over the Imja Khola river in a narrow gorge. Soon we'll reach Pangboche village (3860 m). From there we cross alpine meadows above the tree line then descend to the Khumbu Khola and crossing a swing bridge. Pheriche village (4370 m) is windy so feels colder than most places this region. It's home to the world's highest hospital, run by the Himalayan Rescue Association, specialising in altitude sickness. We'll stay tonight in a tea house lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Pheriche (Acclimatisation day)

No hiking

Today we recommend a day trip to Dingbuche (4360 m) or further to Chukung Valley (4700m) to enjoy scenic mountain views. We'll return back to Pheriche in the evening for another night in a tea house lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Pheriche to Lobuche

Hiking: 7 hours

Today, a slow ascent to the ridge above the village of Dingbuche, then a gentle sloping trail to the village of Duglha (4620 m). The trail climbs steeply onto the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, then contours down to a stream where we cross a bridge to reach the village of Duglha (4620 m). Then we'll take a short steep climb on the moraine to a row of stone monuments in memory of Sherpas and climbers who have perished. From here we move on to Khumbu valley where we have a fantastic view of the mountains before we reach the village of Lobuche (nearly 4930 m).

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Lobuche

Hiking: 8 hours

Today we'll take an early morning walk to Gorak Shep and the final climb to Kala Patter (5545 m), passing through meadows and over scree slopes as we continue beside the moraine of the huge creaking glacier. This is a long hard trek, but the view from the top surpasses anything anyone can imagine — the best vantage point for views of Everest and other peaks. We'll return for another night in Lobuche.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

Gorak Shep to Pheriche

Hiking: 8 hours

This morning, a key highlight of our trip. We'll take an early morning walk to Everest Base Camp along the Khumbu glacier. After having lunch at Gorak Shep, a small village at the edge of a frozen lakebed, the trek continues back down to Pheriche (4240 m). We'll stay overnight at a tea house lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11

Pheriche to Tangboche

Hiking: 6 hours

Today we'll cover a lot of ground and descend thousands of feet into far more oxygen-rich air as we hike. After lunch we emerge from the valley and climb a short distance to Pheriche Pass, before descending to cross the river Imja Khola. Climbing on through the park-like rhododendron forests bursting with flowers in the spring months, we eventually reach Tengboche. Tengboche hosts the main Tibetan Buddhist temple in the Khumbu region. Tengboche is less a village than a large gompa — everyone living there is associated with the monastery in some way.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12

Tangboche to Namche Bazaar

Hiking: 6 hours

Today we continue our overall descent into more oxygen-rich air, first to the Dudh Koshi river. After a 1.5 hour climb to Kyangjuma for lunch, there's a mostly flat walk to Namche Bazaar, where we'll once more enjoy the nforgettable panoramic views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Everest and Ama Dablam that inspired us at the outset of our trek. Tonight in Namche Bazaar, where we can find services like hot showers and internet access for a small fee, along with local bars and souvenir shops. There will most likely be time for you to explore on your own before dinner. We'll stay at a tea house lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Hiking: 7 hours

Leaving Namche Bazaar behind, we have a challenging final day of trekking from Phakding to Lukla (2650 m). We begin with a short descent, then climb 200 m to Lukla as we leave the long trail behind.
