Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival Day: Launceston

Welcome to Launceston! Airport transfers are available between 9 am and 2 pm. Meet your tour members in the lobby for a briefing, introductions and bike preparation at 3 pm for about an hour. Then enjoy Launceston for the rest of the day. It's pretty and compact, with colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes lining the hillsides and riverbanks. It has great cafés, crafts and galleries, including the prestigious Queen Victoria Museum. Launceston Gorge is a short walk from the CBD. It has Victorian parklands, complete with peacocks, and rugged cliffs popular with climbers.

Meals: None

DAY 2

Launceston to St Helens

Cycling: approx. 60 km

This morning we'll cycle out of Launceston as a group, and travel 15 km through farmland to Whitehills, a newly developed wine region. Then we'll head to the historic town of Evandale for a coffee. Evandale is famous for its beautifully preserved buildings, its Sunday market, and for hosting the annual World Penny Farthing Bicycle Championships. We'll ride our 21st century bikes on a backroad to Nile and Conara, then drive to the small coastal town of St Helens. Later this afternoon, we'll drive to the Bay of Fires Conservation Area and walk on the dazzling white sandy beach.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 3

St Helens to Bicheno

Cycling: 60–75 km

Start today's ride from St Helens and travel along the coast to Bicheno, a fishing village and resort town with lichen-covered 'red rocks'. OR, drive to the inland town of St Marys and enjoy a spectacular downhill ride along the Elephant Pass (over Mt Elephant) to the coast, and follow the coastline to Bicheno. This is the flattest riding of the entire trip, so enjoy the leisurely day, with views most of the day over the Tasman Sea as you pedal past pristine white sandy beaches. We'll stay overnight at a motel in Bicheno.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 4

Bicheno to Coles Bay to Freycinet National Park to Swansea

Cycling: approx. 40 km

An easy cycling day today, with a gently undulating 40 km ride to popular Coles Bay along the Freycinet Peninsula road. We'll regroup in Coles Bay and walk to Wineglass Bay, voted one of the world's top 10 beaches by several travel authorities. Freycinet National Park, Tasmania's first national park, features stunning red and pink granite formations and 'The Hazards', a series of jagged granite peaks in a line. Enjoy the park for the afternoon, and then we'll drive to Swansea, one of Tasmania's oldest towns, in Great Oyster Bay in the centre of the East Coast.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 5

Swansea to Richmond

Cycling: approx. 60 km

This morning we'll cycle 60 km south along the coastline to Triabunna, the largest township on the East Coast. We'll regroup here and transfer to Richmond, a beautiful town thriving on tourism, with well-preserved sandstone buildings from the early 1800s. It's also home to Australia's oldest working bridge, built in 1823. We'll stay overnight here, at a hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 6

Richmond to Hobart

Cycling: approx. 30 km (plus optional 21 km down Mt Wellington)

We'll cycle into Hobart via Risdon Cove, site of Tasmania's fist British settlement. From here, we'll ride over the 4-lane Bowen Bridge across the Derwent River, and along the inner city cycleway leading to the city centre. We'll regroup at the Cenotaph, then celebrate our East Coast achievement with a drink at Salamanca Place. You may choose to join the optional transfer up Hobart's iconic Mt Wellington (1270 m), with views over all of southern Tasmania. Then, cycle back to sea level on the easiest 21 km of cycling you'll ever do!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 7

Departure Day: Hobart

Today is a free day to explore Tasmania's cosmopolitan capital city of just over 200,000 people. Airport transfers are available until noon. Wherever your next journey takes you, you'll leave Tasmania with wonderful memories.
