DAY 1

Arrival Day: Passau

No cycling

Welcome to 'the City of 3 Rivers' (the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz). Explore Passau on a boat cruise (not included), or walk through the picturesque old town. Historic buildings and stories are everywhere you turn. Between 4 and 7 pm, pick up your bike (or if you arrive later this evening, pick it up tomorrow morning). Return to your hotel at your leisure.

Meals: None

DAY 2

Passau to Schlögener Loop

Cycling: approx. 44 km

Start your first cycling route, through the Upper Danube Valley to Schlögen. In the village of Engelhartszell, you can visit the only Trappist monastery in Austria. You could even sample delicious liqueurs straight from the convent. Then, on to the impressive Schlögener Loop, where the river makes a complete 180-degree hairpin turn before flowing east once more.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 3

Schlögen to Linz

Cycling: approx. 53 km

Small ferries are constantly crossing back and forth across the Danube. Take one, then cycle through the fertile basin of Eferdinger to Linz. Linz is capital of Upper Austria and was the 2009 European Capital of Culture. Highlights include its historic old square and its evening shopping. Also, its large rolling hill (Poíöstlingher), accessible by train on a special mountain railway with toothed ('rack') rails.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 4

Linz to Enns to Grein

Cycling: approx. 60 km

Austria's oldest town, Enns, is on your way and highly recommended. It was granted town status in 1212, but has had settlements since 4000 BC. Then, on through tranquil hinterland, passing the old Celtic village Mitterkirchen, the majestic church in Baumgartenberg and the romantic castle of Burg Clam. By day's end you reach the lovely baroque village of Greine. There, Austria's oldest theatre awaits your royal visit.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 5

Grein to Melk

Cycling: approx. 51 km

Today, tall and densely wooded rock formations line your path. High on a bank above the Danube, you'll see the Basilica of Maria Taferl. Many thousands make pilgrimages there each year in honour of the stories of miracles and angelic processions there. From there, you are greeted from afar by the marvellous Benedictine Monastery of Melk.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 6

Melk to Krems / Traismauer

Cycling: approx. 40 / 55 km

The magnificent Wachau, one of Austria's biggest tourism destinations, is on your path today. In this beautiful valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll see terraced vineyards, apricot groves, castles, palaces and monasteries. You may choose to take a break from cycling and relax on a short boat excursion. En route to Krems you'll pass the winery villages of Spitz, Weisskirchen and Dürnstein. Their quaint and tempting taverns offer Austrian hospitality at its best — something that must be experienced first hand.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7

Krems / Traismauer to Vienna

Cycling: approx. 39 km, plus train

Start today with a train trip to Tulln, another of Austria's oldest towns. Then back on your bike for a ride through the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald), highland forest near the outskirts of Vienna. We suggest a visit to the impressive monastery in Klosterneuburg by the Danube just north of Vienna. Then continue on to 'The City of Music' itself. Vienna's famous former residents include Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Schubert, Brahms, Haydn and Mahler.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 8

Departure Day: Vienna

No cycling

Vienna is one of the world's most liveable cities. Must-sees include the Naschmarkt, a food/goods market that's run for more than 500 years. Also, the Vienna State Opera and other sights on the Ringstrasse, the beautiful boulevard circling the inner city. There's the imperial palace Schönbrunn — Austria's top tourist attraction; the eccentric Hundertwasser house and museum; the Prater amusement park, and many others. Take the train back to Passau (included), or extend your time in Vienna. You could also return to Passau by bus or cruise ship (not included — surcharge applies).
