Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival Day: Vienna

No cycling

Vienna, 'the City of Music', consistently ranks as one of the world's most liveable cities. It was once home to classical greats including Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Take time to see sights including Vienna's top attraction, the Schönbrunn Palace, the elegant Ringstrasse boulevard circling the inner city, and the Prater amusement park. Tonight, why not visit a uniquely Viennese 'heurige' tavern, which sells only Viennese wine, and food.

Meals: None

DAY 2

Vienna to Bratislava

Cycling: approx. 62 km

Your first cycling day takes you from urban to rural landscapes full of birdsong. On your way is the Archaeological Park Carnuntum — 1st century ruins of a Roman army camp and surrounds, covering 10 km2. Then, on to Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, set on both sides of the Danube. Bratislava is steeped in the histories of cultures including Czech, Slovak, Austrian, Hungarian and German and Jewish. Many Hungarian kings and queens were crowned at St Martin's Cathedral. See the main square and its baroque and renaissance architecture, and also enjoy its striking modern skyline.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 3

Bratislava to Mosonmagyaróvár

Cycling: approx. 40 km

Leaving Bratislava, you'll soon arrive in Hungary's marshy Szigetkšz area — a paradise for birds, fish... and cyclists! This wild and untouched lowland has more than 500 tiny islands, quaint villages and a labyrinth of Danube canals and creeks. Next it's Mosonmagyaróvár, the 'City of 17 Bridges'. Due to the length of its name, foreigners often refer to it as Moson, while locals call it Ovár. (It was once two cities — Moson and Magyaróvár).

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 4

Mosonmagyaróvár to Komárom

Cycling: approx. 45 km, plus train

Today, bike through the major agricultural area of Little Alföld (Little Hungarian Plain) and on to Györ. Györ is one of the most important cities in the Hungarian lowlands, with an alluring historic centre featuring narrow lanes, churches and baroque buildings. Hungary's medieval King Matthias called Györ his favourite city. Next, travel by train to Komárom on the Danube, where you will find your overnight accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 5

Komárom region to Esztergom

Cycling: approx. 58 km, plus train

Today, cycle along the banks of the Slovakian Danube on quiet roads through charming villages, and the Roman fort of Kelemantia. Your destination: glamorous Esztergom, a.k.a the 'Town of Bishops and Kings', 'The Hungarian Rome' and the 'Royal City'. Esztergom Basilica is the largest Catholic Church in Hungary. The city is rated as a major tour highlight by most travelers.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 6

Esztergom region to Budapest

Cycling: approx. 58 km, plus boat or train

Leaving Esztergom you'll cycle amidst rolling hills to a spot where the Danube divides itself, creating Szentendre Island. After a short ferry ride (not included), cycle down the small country roads through the welcoming villages. Back on the mainland, the Open Air Museum is highly recommended. Numerous handicraft boutiques provide the opportunity to buy wonderful Hungarian souvenirs as well as sample traditional cuisine. Next, travel to Hungary's capital, Budapest, by boat or train, enjoying fantastic views as you approach.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7

Departure Day: Budapest

No cycling

Today your unforgettable cycle tour of this most beautiful stretch of the Danube comes to an end. The day is yours to enjoy one of the world's most beautiful cities. Hungary's great capital spans both banks of the river, and is easily explored by foot. We suggest the daily buses or speedboat if you wish to return to Vienna.
